Yoga Pose Just Be Yoga

About Yoga

Happy woman leaving yoga classYoga is an ancient Indian science and philosophy that dates back more than 5000 years.  Though its exact origins are unknown it is considered to be the oldest physical discipline. Yoga is also known as one of the oldest holistic health care systems, not just because of its fundamental healing approach, but also because of its many benefits for physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

Many people think that yoga is just stretching. But while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical benefits. The poses can be done quickly in succession, creating heat in the body through movement (vinyasa-style yoga) or more slowly to increase stamina and perfect the alignment of the pose.

Just be yoga integrates both of these styles creating a flowing practice with Iyengar precision. Students are supported to re-train their bodies posture and movement so they can move away from those old, destructive habits. This development supports healing and noticeable changes to how the body moves.

Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word ‘yuj’ which means ‘to unite or integrate. Yoga is thus the union of body, mind and spirit — a union which we reach through the yoga practices of specific postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), relaxation techniques (pratyahara and dharana) and meditation (dhyana).

Yoga methods encompass the entire field of our existence, from the physical, emotional and mental to the spiritual. Its methods include ethical disciplines, physical postures, breath control, as well as meditation.
